History of the Locksmith

History of the Locksmith

Many people have heard or used the term locksmith, but what exactly is a locksmith and what do they do. Locksmiths have been around for over 4000 years creating, installing, and fixing locking devices. Some of the functions locksmiths perform are designing and building locks that can secure buildings, cabinets, objects, or facilities. The first locksmiths used wooden devices that worked off of the tin tumbler principle and required a large wooden key to unlock. In Europe in the 18th Century advancements in the properties and production of metals gave locksmiths the ability to create more durable locks and keys. Along with the development of better locks came the ability to mass produce these locks and this drastically changed the purpose and job of the locksmith.
Locksmiths no longer designed and built their locks, they then began working as repairmen. With mass production can sometimes come inferior products and now the job of the locksmith was to repair locks and to replicate keys. While their role may have changed with all the mass produced locks, there was more than enough work for locksmiths as they began to repair industrial locks that were either damaged due to use or came from the factory with defective parts.
Today locksmiths still primarily fix various locks from residential to commercial, but they also have moved into the security sector as well. With the advancements in locks and lock making that include touchpad or keyless entry locksmiths are often called to install or fix these devices. If it involves a lock, the modern locksmith can repair or replace it, and this includes automobiles as well.
